Local mounties provided an update on a fatal car accident that closed Highway 5 in both directions on May 29th.

A 27-year-old woman’s Toyota Prius collided head on with a southbound tractor trailer.

Valemount RCMP, Valemount Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance responded to the collision on May 29th at 2:30 pm. The accident took place 51 km south of Valemount on Highway 5.

The woman was killed and the driver of the tractor trailer was uninjured. Investigators believe that drugs and alcohol were not a factor.

The northbound Prius crossed into the oncoming lane after a straight stretch of road, leading some to believe it could have been a case of distracted driving, falling asleep or a heart attack. There is no cell service in the area. Instead of turning with the road, the Prius tracked straight ahead where it collided with the semi.

Investigation is now being led by the BC Coroners office.
