The Valemount Legion was “the place to be” last Friday night – Mike Berkenpas and his band performed a great blues music concert, and the urge to dance was irresistible! The Legion has local musicians playing music every Friday night at 7pm. Dinner is served from 5:30 too!

The Elks Hall played host to a traditional Christmas Dinner for members of the Old Age Pensioners Organization last week in McBride. Above, Eleanor Johnson, Sheilagh Foster, Maureen McCoy, and Barb Marier sang Christmas carols while staff and Manager Clara Appleby from Scotiabank served dinner and cleaned up. Staff at the McBride Scotiabank raised a total of $1062 on a raffle to support the event, open to all folks aged 55 and up. Appleby (right) also announced the retirement of Dawna Hickerty, volunteer head cook for the Royal Purple, who prepared the meal. “I have to say it was all the Purple Ladies and the other volunteers that made my job easy and made me look good,” Hickerty told the Goat. She’s been the head of catering for the Royal Purple since October 2005, and says the people she’s worked with have become her second family. “It’s like a food jam-session when we get together and compare recipes, how we do things and how we are going to decorate,” says Hickerty, and of course they care about each other and their families, and enjoy raising funds to help children in the community. “I was 76 this year, so I feel it’s time to step down and let the younger generation take over, as we know that they are capable of doing,” says Hickerty, but of course she is always willing to help.
