The Prince George Fire Centre is reporting eighteen new fires in its region after a lightning system moved through yesterday.

The largest of the fires, 60km southwest of Vanderhoof,is about 0.4 hectares big, a press release said.

The fire risk for the long weekend remains high to extreme and more lightning is forecast for most areas within the PG Fire Centre’s zone.

As of noon, August 2nd, there is a ban on open fires and fireworks in the region, but camp fires are still permitted.

Meanwhile, a press release from North District Traffic Services says increased police patrol of the highways will be in effect this weekend to heighten police visibility and to target “aggressive” drivers. Police will also be targeting impaired and distracted drivers.

Members of the public are encouraged to contact police if they come across erratic driving behaviour. And the PG Fire Centre thanked the public for calls received about the most recent fires. Fires can be reported at *5555 on your cell or 1-800-663-5555.
