The Valemount Marina Association’s annual fishing derby kicked up waves last weekend at Kinbasket Lake with a dozen boats vying for the biggest catch.
As usual there were great prizes for biggest fish caught on Saturday, Sunday and overall in the men’s women’s and kids categories.
While the weather was a bit blustery, and the smaller boats got rocked, many still came home victorious.
There was a minor incident where a boat flipped, but it was close enough to shore that the men got out safely. However, since their motor had died they had to be towed by a couple that spotted them. They were not injured.
The RCMP’s marine unit was also out on the water doing an educational campaign. RCMP said they were welcomed by fishers. There was one incident of illegal fishing where a man was fined.
Total tallies of warnings and tickets were not available as of press time.
Stay tuned next week for the fishing derby winners!
