Arenas close for staff ammonia training

The Robson Valley Recreation Centre and the Canoe Valley Recreation Centre were closed for the week of April 7-11 for staff training. Glenn McQuarrie held sessions in McBride to train and update staff on the safe operation and handling of ammonia refrigeration plants. Ammonia is an extremely efficient and common refrigerate and is a carbon neutral gas. However, it is toxic and flammable and needs to be treated with care. At 35 ppm alarms trip, and at 300+ ppm it causes irritation and breathing problems, which become fatal with prolonged exposure. As part of the training, staff followed the path ammonia takes through the RVRC. /SUBMITTED PHOTO
