The upper Fraser River Chinook salmon have now entered the final chapter of their lives as they return to their natal waters where they were born 4 or 5 years earlier. With overwhelming odds against them they have returned to spawn and die. The crystal clear water of Swift Creek in Valemount offers great opportunities to observe the Chinooks which are the largest salmon species in the world, while at Rearguard Falls the salmon have all they can handle to overcome the power of the water and spawn further upstream. /LEON LORENZ

The Chinook salmon are back to spawn in the Fraser River. Local videographer Leon Lorenz caught this salmon jumping at Rearguard Falls. Despite their long journey from the ocean, these amazing fish hurtle themselves up the falls to spawn in the waters above it where they were born. /LEON LORENZ
