The survivor of last week’s assault in Valemount is in stable condition, the RCMP says.
The assault took place in a home on Pine Road the evening of August 26th. The suspect died shortly after and the survivor was taken to the Valemount Health Centre. The RCMP’s North District Major Crime Unit is investigating and will not release further information during the investigation, said Corporal Madonna Saunderson.
In a follow-up email, Corporal Brett Urano told The Goat the RCMP will not be releasing the names of anyone involved to avoid retraumatizing the survivor.
“The suspect is deceased and we believe that there is no further threat to public safety,” Urano added.
Robson Valley Community Services told The Goat residents can access a number of free support services for survivors of gender-based violence, including counseling for those who identify as female, sexualized assault services, and supportive housing, among others.
“This incident is a stark reminder of the urgent and ongoing crisis of intimate partner violence in our society,” co-director Jana MacMaster wrote in an email to The Goat. “Gender-based violence is not a private issue – it is a public safety emergency that demands coordinated action, accountability and compassion.”
