VALEMOUNT, B.C. — Police say two people were found dead after a structure fire at a campsite on Creekside Road earlier this month.

At about 5:54 a.m. on March 15th, eight members of the Valemount & District Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire at the intersection of Highway 5 south and Slocan Office Road.

“There was a fully developed working fire which destroyed the late model 5th wheel type RV trailer. Flames were suppressed and mop up of hotspots completed within 35 minutes,” Lalonde told The Goat.

A 69 year old male and 39 year old female were later found deceased inside the RV.

While police continue their work to identify the two individuals, Lalonde said the pair were coworkers at a local traffic control company.

RCMP Media Relations Officer Corporal Alex Bérubé says the cause of the fire remains under investigation, adding the BC Coroner Service has also opened an investigation into the two deaths.

Lalonde says the incident highlights the importance of having functional smoke alarms.

“Reminder to everyone —Smoke alarms and batteries to make them work — are so inexpensive,” Lalonde said.
