Wildfire discovered east of Kinbasket Lake

A wildfire was discovered Thursday morning east of Kinbasket Lake, about 57 kilometres northeast of Blue River and 77 kilometres southeast of Valemount.

According to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) dashboard, the fire, currently estimated at 30 hectares, is located on the east bank of Kinbasket Lake and is suspected to have been caused by humans. The incident number for the wildfire is G30819.

BCWS told The Goat via email the fire was reported to be showing rank 2 characteristics — a surface fire with a visible, open flame, an inconsistent flame front and a slow rate of spread.

The wildfire is currently listed as out of control, meaning it is expected to spread. BCWS says under current weather conditions, the fire is showing minimal growth, though that could change with the weather.

In the next 24 hours, wind is expected to come from the northeast at 15 to 25 km/hr gusting to 40 km/hr, however winds are expected to be light and variable.

“This can impact the wildfire in the direction of where it will grow, since wildfires can be wind driven,” BCWS said.

The service said Robson Valley Fire Zone staff are currently assessing the incident to find feasible long-term objectives, as well as finding any opportunities to engage in suppression efforts in areas where it is safe to do so.
