UPDATE: As of 8:07 p.m. on June 12th, the fire is classified as under control, meaning it is not expected to spread beyond its current perimeter.
A 0.2 hectare fire was discovered on Thursday near Small River, about 18 kilometres south of Dunster by Highway 16.
Lightning is the suspected cause of the fire, according to the BC Wildfire Service.
The fire is classified as out of control, meaning that it is anticipated to spread beyond its current perimeter. According to the BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) dashboard – where the fire is named G30606 – suppression actions are being taken to limit its spread, but further details on the wildfire response are not yet available.
In an interview with The Goat, BCWS information officer Pedro Roldan-Delgado said BCWS does not anticipate the fire will grow to a fire of concern. According to Roldan-Delgado, winds are calm and BCWS officers are throwing buckets of water on the fire, in addition to helicopters suppressing the fire.
Roldan-Delgado said further information may come later in the day when the crew gives an operational update. The Goat will update this story as details become available.
