Letter: Feedback and apology for perceived discrimination

To the Editor of the Rocky Mountain Goat News

Regarding the recent article “Use of “Welfare Wednesday” in Debate,” (July 22nd, 2015 issue) I would like to provide some feedback for your readers.
The article infers that there is inherent discrimination towards people on income assistance in the BC Emergency Health Services (BCEHS) orientation course and this is untrue. The instructor’s words were paraphrased without consent or context. However, we acknowledge that the instructor’s comments could be perceived as discriminatory and for that, we apologize.

We pride ourselves on being an inclusive and respectful workplace. As a learning organization, we are always looking for opportunities to improve educational opportunities for our workforce and uphold our professional standards. BCEHS employees are constantly striving to enhance patient care and better serve their communities.
Our paramedics help people from all walks of life often when they are most vulnerable or in difficult circumstances and cannot effectively provide patient care without public trust. All patients deserve and should expect to be treated with dignity and respect, and with the same high-level of professionalism and compassion.
I hope your readers would not expect anything less.
