Taking a leap… salmon have reached Rearguard Falls to spawn. They travel 1200km upstream from the ocean where they have spent several years feeding. Only the strongest salmon reach this far. After they leave the ocean they don’t eat and have to rely on stores of energy to get them to their birthing grounds where they will spawn and then die. Another excellent salmon viewing location is at George Hicks Park right next to the Visitor Information Centre in Valemount. Rearguard Falls is approx 10 minutes north of Valemount. Photo: Laura Keil
